According to the list of legislative and program works of the Council of Ministers, the government plans to adopt Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040 – a strategy for the development of the fuel and energy sector in the first quarter of this year.
PEP2040 is based on three main elements: a just transition, building a parallel zero-emission energy system and good air quality. Compared to the previous version of PEP, the project takes into account a number of technological changes that have occurred in recent months and the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first pillar of the project, i.e. just transition, assumes that 10 years of EU funds will be allocated from EU funds to regions where the economy depends on the extraction of fossil fuels. The second pillar involves the creation of a parallel to the existing, zero-emission energy system within 20 years. This task is based on two strategic elements – nuclear energy and offshore wind energy.
The third pillar of energy policy is based on good air quality. The project provides for the abandonment of coal as a heating source in individual heating: by 2030 in urban areas, and by 2040 in rural areas. Fossil fuels will gradually be replaced by other heat sources, such as heat pumps. By 2030, the number of households connected to the heating network in cities will also increase by approx. 1.5 million.
