As informed by the Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, on February 2, 2021, the Council of Ministers approved the “Polish energy policy until 2040”. It provides a clear vision of Poland’s energy transformation strategy, creating an axis for programming EU funds related to the energy sector, as well as meeting economic needs resulting from the weakening of the economy by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minister emphasized that PEP2040 is important for the advanced work on the National Reconstruction Plan, which is the basis for spending funds under the Facility for Reconstruction and Strengthening Resilience, as well as for just transition plans and the draft Partnership Agreement. As Kurtyka points out, PEP2040 will put Poland on the path towards a low-emission economy by implementing a fair energy transformation, developing renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency and improving air quality.
In 2040, more than half of the installed capacity will be zero-emission sources. A special role in this process will be played by the implementation of offshore wind energy into the Polish power system and the commissioning of a nuclear power plant. These will be two strategic new areas and industries that will be built in Poland. Parallel to the large-scale energy sector, distributed and civic energy will develop – based on local capital.
The full content of PEP2040 will be published together with the resolution of the Council of Ministers in the Official Journal of the Republic of Poland “Monitor Polski”.
