The website of the Government Legislation Center has published a draft of the ordinance of the Minister of Climate and Environment amending the ordinance on the detailed conditions for the operation of the gas system. It contains the quality parameters that biomethane will have to meet in order to be injected into the gas networks.
The project aims to create conditions for the development of the biomethane market, and thus to increase the share of renewable energy sources. The current regulation specifies only the quality parameters of gaseous fuels, which include traditional natural gas.
The quality requirements for biomethane specified in the project are the same as the values specified in the system regulation for natural gas. However, the Ministry emphasizes that in the case of biomethane, it is important to determine the content of such pollutants as: halogenated hydrocarbons, ammonia and siloxanes, as they may adversely affect both the gas transmission and distribution infrastructure and the safety of connected consumers.
Specifying the precise quality parameters dedicated to biomethane will remove doubts related to the threat to the technical condition of gas pipelines. As emphasized by the ministry, the proposed regulations are also aimed at ensuring the security of supplies to end users whose installations and devices are adapted to the combustion of gas with specific parameters.
