In a partial vote, the European Parliament backed the European Union’s binding target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, which is higher than that proposed by the European Commission of “at least 55 percent” in 2030. It also goes beyond the level of cuts advocated by most EU member states that must negotiate with Parliament to agree an ultimate reduction target.

The current EU target for 2030 is to cut emissions by 40 percent.
