Germany: distance criterion for wind energy

  • Reading time:2 mins read

September 20 this year the German government has adopted the draft 2030 climate protection program (Klimaschutzprogramm 2030). The new “climate package” contains a number of new measures to accelerate climate action. According to its provisions, the government is also planning to introduce a ban on locating new wind farms at a distance of 1000 meters from buildings throughout Germany. The introduction of a clear boundary for placing new wind farms by indicating the distance to their location is to increase public acceptance for such installations.

According to estimates, the mechanism would prevent the construction of new wind farms in about half of the country. What’s more, existing installations would also be limited, in which case it would be necessary to carry out the so-called Repowering“. Individual German Länder and municipalities would have to formally exclude the application of this criterion in order to allow the investment to be implemented at a distance of less than 1000 meters from the nearest buildings.
