The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has supported the draft of the new rules. It aims to increase the EU’s greenhouse gas emission reduction target from 40% to – at least – 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. 52 votes were cast in favor, 24 against and 4 abstentions. Voting on the new target is scheduled for June. After that, the amended law will be finally approved by the Member States.<\/p>\n

In addition, it was agreed that the Commission will propose an intermediate climate target for 2040. This will be implemented “where appropriate, at the latest six months after the first global stocktake under the Paris Agreement”. At the same time, the Commission will publish the projected indicative Union budget for greenhouse gas reductions for the period 2030-2050 and the underlying methodology.<\/p>\n

In addition, the Commission will work with economic sectors that choose to prepare indicative voluntary action plans to help achieve the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality target. It will act by monitoring the development of such plans and facilitating EU-level dialogues.<\/p>\n
