Energy storage within the capacity market

The Polish Energy Group organizes projects in various locations for a total of about 40 MW. Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne, on the other hand, is developing concepts for a battery power storage facility whose capacity could amount to 50 MW and 200 MWh or 100 MW and 400 MWh.

In addition, the national electricity system can be significantly strengthened by another entity preparing investments in battery energy storage.

Last month’s general certification for 2024 is required for all generators with a capacity of more than 2 MW and is also mandatory for projects that are to take part in the capacity market later on.

The potential of the submitted energy storage facilities is due to projects implemented mainly by one company. Start-up National Energy Storage System (KSME), which reported, by the end of March general certification, energy storage for a total capacity of 5. 56 GW.

KSME plans to build the largest energy storage complex (in Siedlce or Konin) as well as a research centre on storage technologies.

For the last two years, KSME has been planning investments in energy storage facilities based on electrochemical battery technologies, flow storage technologies and hydrogen energy storage installations. The launch of the first warehouses is planned for 2020-2021. The key to the pace of work will be the regulations that the Ministry of Energy plans to adopt as part of the announced amendment to the Energy Law.

In addition to the provision of stocks in the power market mechanism, installations would allow for balancing supply and demand within the system services or provide energy reserve for distribution network operators.
